Fehr’s practice is always rooted in the realm of sound: whether in video, sculpture, or installation, his background as a composer shapes the way he orchestrates materials, disciplines, and spaces. Much like a score that fuses different instruments into something greater, his works weave diverse elements into a larger whole. At their core lies a desire to spark the imagination on multiple levels—the subconscious, the dreamlike, and the mental—through sound, words, and images. His works tell stories marked by ambivalence, pathos, humor, and guided by a sense of humility toward the unknown.
His mixed-media installations and performance have been shown at institutions such as Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Weserburg Bremen, Brücke-Museum Berlin and Kunsthaus Dahlem. He has received grants from the Karl Schmidt-Rottluff foundation, Musikfonds, Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg and the Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa. Fehr has created music for numerous dance and theater projects, including at Volksbühne Berlin, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Schauspielhaus Wien, and Deutsches Theater Göttingen. He releases music as Nicolas Fehr as well as with his bands ooi and Group Hug.
